Thailand’s export landscape is set for moderate growth, estimated between 2% and 4% this year, as indicated by the National Shippers’ Council of Thailand (NSCT), primarily driven by a surge in foreign investments.
During a media briefing on Monday, NSCT Chairman Dhanakorn Kasetrsuwan highlighted that while the trend in export figures is upward, the nature of this growth poses challenges. He stressed that much of the increase results from foreign enterprises establishing production facilities in Thailand, rather than an enhancement in local export performance.
“Although our export growth is hovering between 2–4% this year, the outcome is far from ideal,” Dhanakorn remarked. “A considerable part of this growth stems from foreign investments, which might intensify competition for Thai businesses, particularly small to medium-sized enterprises.”
Thailand remains a magnet for international investors due to its strategic positioning, robust infrastructure, and access to regional markets. Numerous multinational corporations have expanded their manufacturing capabilities in sectors such as electronics, automotive components, and processed food, thereby contributing to increased export volumes.
Nevertheless, industry voices caution that without enhanced support, local exporters might find it hard to compete against financially robust foreign companies. Rising production costs, global economic uncertainties, and volatile demand in key markets like the United States, China, and Europe add to the hurdles faced by Thai businesses.
The shippers’ council has urged the government to implement targeted strategies to bolster domestic exporters, focusing on facilitating access to financing, providing export incentives, and developing policies that enable Thai firms to ascend the value chain.
In spite of these concerns, officials express cautious optimism that ongoing investment and improving global trade conditions could aid in stabilizing Thailand’s export outlook in the forthcoming months, provided that local enterprises receive the necessary support to maintain competitiveness.
