Bright Pink Sky Graces Birmingham: LED Stadium Lights Explanation

Bright Pink Sky Graces Birmingham: LED Stadium Lights Explanation

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Thursday evening, an astonishing sight unfolded over Birmingham and surrounding areas in the West Midlands, as the sky transformed into a vibrant pink. Locals took to social media, sharing videos and images while speculating the origins of this striking glow.

While some thought it was a spectacular sunset and others linked it to the Northern Lights, the actual cause was more straightforward.

Birmingham City Football Club confirmed that the pink hue emanated from the LED lights at St Andrew’s stadium. The club shared a photo of the sky on social media with the caption: “Pink sky at night, Blues delight.”

Not only was the pink sky visible in Birmingham, but neighboring towns like Hednesford in Staffordshire also experienced the phenomenon.

BBC meteorologist Simon King noted that the weather conditions played a significant role in this visual occurrence. He explained that the clouds and falling snow reflected artificial lighting into the atmosphere. “Light from roads, stadiums, and buildings can be reflected by snow and clouds,” he mentioned.

Graham Madge from the UK Met Office added that the scattered blue light from the snow enhances the visibility of red and pink tones in the sky.

Experts assured that this captivating pink glow was not a natural event but rather the result of stadium LED lights reflecting off clouds amid snowy weather. Nonetheless, many found the scene to be stunning and unforgettable.
