AMU Educator Fatally Shot: Police Launch Search for Suspects

Post by : Meena Hassan

A teacher was tragically shot and killed on Wednesday evening at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh, raising serious alarms about campus safety. Danish Rao, a seasoned computer science instructor who dedicated over 11 years to the ABK High School, was murdered near the university’s central library.

Eyewitness accounts and initial police investigations reveal that Danish Rao, accompanied by two colleagues at around 8:50 pm, was suddenly confronted by two unknown individuals on a scooter. The attackers brandished firearms and subsequently opened fire on Rao, hitting him multiple times, including two fatal shots to the head. One of the assailants ominously warned Rao, saying, "You don’t know me yet, now you will," hinting at a potential premeditated attack.

Following the shooting, the perpetrators escaped on their scooter, leaving the university community in a state of fear and disbelief.

Senior Superintendent of Police Neeraj Jadon confirmed that both suspects actively fired upon Rao. He was urgently transported to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, where he was pronounced dead due to his severe injuries.

The shooting happened in a well-frequented area close to the university’s main library, sparking critical discussions about campus security protocols. In light of this incident, police have constructed six specialized teams responsible for the investigation, concentrating on examining CCTV footage from various angles to trace the attackers and their escape route.

AMU Proctor Mohd Wasim Ali addressed the media, expressing profound sorrow and shock over the slaying of the veteran teacher. He confirmed the incident to the public and underscored the necessity for reinforced security and vigilance on campus to safeguard both students and staff.

This act of violence emerged shortly after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave an address in the state Assembly, praising improvements in law and order throughout Uttar Pradesh. He highlighted the importance of a secure environment to foster investment and development within the state. Nonetheless, the murder at AMU prompts urgent inquiries regarding the safety of educational environments in the area.

The university leadership and local police face pressing demands to conduct a comprehensive investigation and prevent future occurrences of such violent acts. Authorities have urged anyone with information on the shooting to step forward.

As the investigation evolves, the AMU community mourns the loss of a cherished educator and demands prompt justice. Updates regarding the case and efforts to capture the shooters are eagerly anticipated.
