A building collapse in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Sunday has killed five people, including a child and an elderly woman, state media reported. Rescuers have saved eight others so far.
The collapse occurred in Bab al-Tabbaneh, one of Tripoli’s poorest neighborhoods. Security forces evacuated nearby buildings fearing further collapses. The affected building had two blocks, each containing six apartments.
Local media footage showed residents and rescue teams removing debris with basic tools and bare hands. This is the second deadly building collapse in Tripoli in recent weeks.
President Joseph Aoun has ordered all emergency services to assist with rescue operations and provide shelter for residents of the collapsed and neighboring buildings.
Lebanon has many old and unsafe buildings, many built illegally or with additional floors added without permits, especially during the 1975-1990 civil war.
In 2024, Amnesty International reported that thousands of Tripoli residents continue to live in unsafe structures, worsened by the 2023 earthquake and Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis. The group urged authorities to urgently assess building safety nationwide.
