Trump States He Pressured Macron on Drug Prices with Tariff Threat

Post by : Meena Hassan

US President Donald Trump has asserted that he successfully influenced French President Emmanuel Macron to increase drug prices in France by leveraging the threat of significant trade tariffs. Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Monday, Trump detailed the interaction while advocating for reduced prescription drug expenses in the United States.

The 79-year-old Republican leader mentioned that he had directly urged Macron to elevate medicine prices in Europe, arguing that American citizens were unfairly overpaying for identical drugs. Trump recounted the dialogue, indicating that Macron initially dismissed the suggestion outright.

As per Trump, the French president persistently pushed back against the demand, which led the US leader to intensify his pressure. Trump stated he subsequently warned Macron that non-compliance would result in a 25 percent tariff on all French products exported to the United States.

According to Trump, this ultimatum altered the dynamics of their conversation, with Macron eventually responding with, “I see,” which Trump took as a sign of agreement.

The former president has consistently claimed that European countries enjoy lower drug prices while American consumers bear the higher costs. He believes imposing higher prices abroad would enable pharmaceutical companies to reduce expenses for US patients.

Earlier this summer, the US and the European Union entered a trade agreement that introduced a 15 percent tariff on various European goods entering the US market. However, there have been no official announcements or policy changes from French authorities concerning drug prices since that deal.

There is no confirmation from the French government supporting Trump's assertion, nor any evidence that France has modified its pharmaceutical pricing in response to the claimed conversation.

Trump’s comments emerge as he continues to emphasize vigorous trade strategies as a prominent aspect of his leadership, especially in light of ongoing discussions about healthcare costs and international trade relations.
