President Donald Trump has expressed his backing for a bipartisan Russia Sanctions Bill that seeks to penalize nations buying Russian oil, which includes significant economies such as India, China, and Brazil. The legislation, proposed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, could enforce tariffs as high as 500% on countries confirmed to import oil, gas, uranium, and other resources from Russia.
The intent behind this bill is to sever the financial support that fuels Russia's military operations, particularly in light of the conflict triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago. This sanctions initiative aims to apply intense economic pressure on Moscow, potentially undermining its capacity to maintain its war efforts.
Senator Graham spoke with Trump at the White House, where the President voiced his approval of the measure, which has been deliberated for several months. A White House representative has also verified this support in discussions with media outlets.
Graham remarked that the timing for these sanctions is critical, as Ukraine seems to be making concessions for peace while Russian President Vladimir Putin persists with aggressive military maneuvers. He noted that a vote on this bill could occur as soon as the following week, although the actual timeline remains uncertain due to other urgent Senate matters, including government funding debates and an impending recess.
The sanctions legislation would empower the US President to impose substantial tariffs and secondary sanctions, effectively penalizing nations that support Russia's wartime economy via trade. Although the White House had earlier requested some flexibility regarding the sanctions' enforcement, it remains uncertain if any modifications were introduced before Trump gave his endorsement.
This bill has accumulated considerable bipartisan support in the Senate, with numerous co-sponsors, and there is a related bill in the House of Representatives introduced by Republican Brian Fitzpatrick.
In the meantime, the Trump administration is actively seeking a resolution to the Ukraine conflict, with key negotiators such as special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, working towards a peace agreement.
