The United States has reiterated its concerns regarding India's acquisition of Russian oil. President Donald Trump issued a warning on Sunday that the U.S. could implement increased tariffs on Indian products if New Delhi persists in its oil imports from Russia.
While speaking from Air Force One, Trump remarked, “Modi is a good guy. He knew I was not happy, and it was vital to make me content.” He added, “They engage in trade, and we can swiftly raise tariffs on them.” This caution follows the U.S. having already doubled import tariffs on Indian goods to 50% last year as a repercussion for India’s significant dependence on Russian crude.
In spite of the elevated tariffs, India's exports to the U.S. saw an increase in November, reflecting resilience in trade relations. Indian officials have signaled a firm position, showing little room for adjustments on U.S. expectations, particularly concerning agricultural imports. However, recent data indicates that India has been curtailing its Russian oil purchases.
To ensure closer oversight of trade practices, India is now requiring its refiners to submit weekly reports on oil imports from both Russia and the United States. Officials predict that imports of Russian crude may drop below one million barrels per day, partly in an effort to facilitate a possible trade agreement with Washington.
Ongoing diplomatic engagements have yet to produce a resolution. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump have communicated by phone at least three times since the tariffs’ introduction, but discussions remain unresolved. Last month, India's Commerce Secretary, Rajesh Agrawal, met with U.S. Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer in Delhi to address trade and economic collaboration.
This scenario emphasizes the escalating tension between India and the United States concerning energy policy and trade. Although both nations are significant global partners, their disputes over Russian oil imports present a new obstacle. Markets, businesses, and policymakers are closely observing whether a compromise will be achieved or if further tariff escalations are imminent.
As India strives to navigate its energy demands alongside diplomatic and trade responsibilities, the results of these discussions may have profound effects not only on bilateral relations but also on the global energy landscape.
