President Donald Trump has made a significant announcement regarding the development of a new series of heavily armed warships named after him—a designation typically reserved for former U.S. presidents. This news was delivered at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, with senior Pentagon and Navy officials present to unveil images and specifics about these state-of-the-art vessels.
The plan starts with the construction of two initial “Trump-class” ships, though Trump hinted that the fleet could expand substantially in the future. He labeled these vessels as “some of the most lethal surface warfare ships ever built,” claiming they will be “the largest battleships in our country’s history.”
Projected to weigh between 30,000 and 40,000 tons, the new ships will feature a comprehensive array of advanced armaments. This includes traditional missiles and guns, as well as next-generation technology currently in development, such as lasers and hypersonic missiles. Trump also noted that these ships would have the capability to deploy nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles, bolstering their strategic role.
Although larger than existing U.S. destroyers and cruisers, the Trump-class will still be slightly smaller than the historic Iowa-class battleships, which were retired in the 1990s.
This announcement follows closely behind the Navy's revelation of a new frigate program called FF(X), aimed at complementing larger ships in the fleet. The Navy plans to launch the first frigate by 2028, based on proven designs from the U.S. Coast Guard. However, some frigate projects, like the Constellation class, are under review and may face cancellation.
These developments occur against the backdrop of rising concerns about China’s swift naval growth. A recent report to Congress highlighted worries that the U.S. is falling behind in shipbuilding capacity and speed compared to Beijing.
“We will restore America as a dominant force in shipbuilding,” proclaimed Trump. “We will ensure that the United States maintains the most powerful fleet in the world, both now and for decades to come, with battleships at the forefront.”
The introduction of the Trump-class warships signifies a substantial initiative to reinforce U.S. naval superiority, implementing cutting-edge technology and firepower, as well as renewing efforts to bolster military shipbuilding and uphold global maritime leadership.
