In a surprising shift, U.S. President Donald Trump recently extended an invitation to Colombia's President Gustavo Petro to visit the White House. This change in tone follows a constructive phone call where they discussed drug issues and regional tensions.
Trump took to social media to express his appreciation for the conversation, stating, “It was a great honor to speak with the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro. He reached out to share perspectives on drug trafficking and other points of contention. I valued his call and am eager to meet him soon.”
This more cordial communication comes after days of Trump criticizing Petro, alleging links to cocaine production and drug trade into the U.S. Remarks about U.S. military operations against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro further escalated tensions.
During a speech to thousands in Bogotá, Petro revealed their discussion lasted an hour, revolving around Venezuela and drug trafficking issues. He claimed that misinformation from certain Colombian politicians had influenced Trump's earlier negative perceptions.
Petro previously condemned U.S. military actions in Venezuela as a breach of sovereignty, comparing them to World War II events, amplifying the diplomatic strains.
Historically, Colombia has been a staunch ally of the U.S., collaborating in combatting drug trafficking and promoting rural development. Yet, recent months have seen growing friction, marked by U.S. sanctions against Petro and curtailments in financial aid, citing a lack of cooperation in the drug war for the first time in close to 30 years.
Trump's initiatives against drug trafficking intensified with attacks on vessels from Venezuela, subsequently including Colombian targets. This recent outreach signals a potential thaw in relations with Petro and Colombia.
