Turkey is actively pursuing a role in a security alliance formed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, mirroring NATO’s collective defense framework. The proposed agreement includes a clause akin to NATO’s Article 5, indicating that an attack on one member would trigger a response from all.
This initiative, initially an agreement between Riyadh and Islamabad, has evolved with Turkey joining the conversation. While Saudi Arabia anticipates providing financial backing, Pakistan is set to contribute its nuclear capabilities, missile technology, and personnel, with Turkey offering its military expertise and leveraging its domestic defense industry, as noted by a strategist based in Ankara.
In light of the United States shifting its focus towards its own interests and those of Israel in the region, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan are forming alliances to clearly delineate friends and adversaries.
Analysts suggest that Turkey’s expanding strategic interests in South Asia, alongside those of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, make this growing alliance a logical development.
The three nations have recently enhanced their cooperative efforts, conducting their inaugural joint naval meeting in Ankara.
Turkey’s involvement adds considerable significance, as it is a key NATO member with the alliance's second-largest military force, just behind the United States.
Both Saudi Arabia and Turkey are aligned in their concerns regarding Shiite-majority Iran, advocating for diplomacy over conflict. They also share a vision for a Sunni-dominated stable Syria and Palestinian sovereignty.
With already robust defense ties, Turkey and Pakistan have worked together on initiatives such as constructing warships for Pakistan’s naval force, enhancing Pakistan’s F-16 jets, and exchanging drone technology with Saudi Arabia as well. Furthermore, Turkey has extended invitations to both nations to partake in its fifth-generation fighter jet development project.
These trilateral defense discussions follow a recent ceasefire that concluded a brief military encounter between India and Pakistan, during which Turkey notably expressed support for Pakistan.
