In an inspiring step forward for inclusion in sports, two determined women from the UAE — Wafaa Al Dahmani and Fatima Al Balushi — have officially achieved FEI status. FEI stands for the International Equestrian Federation, the global body that governs equestrian sports. This recognition allows them to compete in major international competitions and, most importantly, puts them on track to qualify for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
Both women are a part of the Amiri Stables equestrian programme in Abu Dhabi, a special initiative designed to support people of determination (a respectful term used in the UAE for people with disabilities). The programme is focused on helping participants train in dressage, which is a form of horse riding where the rider and the horse perform a series of movements together with harmony and precision. It’s often described as "dancing with horses."
What Did They Achieve?
Recently, Wafaa and Fatima traveled to Wellington Riding in the United Kingdom, where they underwent official evaluations by experts from the FEI. These evaluations are done to classify para-equestrian riders based on their physical ability, ensuring fair competition in events.
As a result:
Wafaa Al Dahmani was classified as a Grade II rider
Fatima Al Balushi was classified as a Grade III rider
This classification is very important because it makes their participation in international competitions official. Now, both riders are on the right path to qualify for the Paralympic Games.
What is Para-Dressage?
Para-dressage is a special category of equestrian sports designed for riders with physical disabilities. Just like in standard dressage, riders and horses perform choreographed routines. However, in para-dressage, the routines are adapted based on the rider’s abilities. It is a sport that requires not just physical strength and skill, but also deep connection and communication between the horse and the rider.
How Did They Prepare?
This achievement didn’t happen overnight. The journey began earlier this year when the Amiri Stables launched a dedicated training programme in Abu Dhabi for people of determination who are passionate about horse riding.
The programme included:
Horse riding lessons: Where riders learned to handle and connect with their horses.
Simulator training: Riders practiced on special equipment that simulates the movement of a horse.
Theoretical classes: Where they learned about equestrian techniques, rules, and strategies.
Physical therapy sessions: To help riders improve their physical condition and flexibility.
Mental health and sports psychology sessions: To prepare the riders mentally for the pressure and discipline of high-level competitions.
Nutrition advice: To keep the riders healthy and strong.
The training was conducted by experienced professionals, including physiotherapists, nutritionists, and psychologists, all of whom specialize in working with athletes.
Experience in the UK
Both Wafaa and Fatima recently traveled to the United Kingdom to continue their training and exposure. While there, they:
Participated in daily training sessions.
Attended the international para-dressage championship.
Engaged with members of the British national para-equestrian team, which is known worldwide for winning many gold medals.
This experience gave them a chance to observe world-class athletes, learn from their routines, and better understand what it takes to compete at the highest level.
What the Riders Say
Wafaa Al Dahmani, who is 31 years old, shared her excitement about the journey. She said that being part of the international training and competing environment gave her a lot of motivation. Meeting other athletes who have achieved great success gave her hope and inspiration.
She also mentioned how much she and her teammate learned during their time in the UK. From new riding techniques to mental preparation strategies, everything they experienced is helping them grow stronger and more confident.
Fatima Al Balushi also expressed gratitude for the support she received from her team and trainers. She said she is proud to represent the UAE on the international stage and is fully focused on preparing for the 2028 Paralympic Games.
Why This Matters
This milestone is not just a personal achievement for Wafaa and Fatima — it’s a significant moment for the UAE’s approach to inclusive sports. The Amiri Stables programme has created a platform for people of determination to shine in sports and push beyond limitations. It is also helping spread awareness about the abilities of people with disabilities and the importance of supporting their dreams.
Equestrian sports, especially para-dressage, require dedication, discipline, and a deep bond between the horse and rider. It’s not easy. Riders must train their horses regularly, maintain their own physical fitness, and constantly improve their skills. For people with disabilities, the challenges are even greater — but so is the satisfaction when they succeed.
By helping two talented women gain international recognition, the programme is also encouraging young Emiratis with disabilities to consider careers in sports. It sends a strong message that disability is not a barrier to success when you have passion, training, and the right support.
The Road Ahead
The journey is far from over. While gaining FEI classification is a major step, Wafaa and Fatima still have a long way to go before the 2028 Paralympics. Over the next few years, they will need to:
Continue their training regularly.
Participate in international competitions to gain more experience and ranking points.
Maintain peak physical and mental condition.
Build a stronger connection with their horses.
The good news is, they are not alone. With continued support from the Amiri Stables, the FEI, and the UAE’s sporting authorities, both riders are well-positioned to represent the nation on the global stage.
The story of Wafaa Al Dahmani and Fatima Al Balushi is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through dedication, support, and belief. Their achievements show the world that when given the right opportunity, people of determination can rise to the highest levels of sports and represent their countries with pride.
As they prepare for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles, they carry the hopes of a nation, and inspire countless others to believe in their own potential.
