Dubai: The United Nations has secured approval for its core budget for 2026, totaling $3.45 billion, as it grapples with financial constraints and plans to downsize its workforce significantly. Following extensive discussions, the General Assembly ratified a budget slightly surpassing the $3.238 billion suggested by Secretary-General António Guterres.
This financial plan encompasses only the UN’s fundamental operations, intentionally excluding peacekeeping missions and specialized agencies such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization, which operate under distinct funding guidelines. The approved sum depicts a cut of about $270 million, or 7.25%, from the $3.72 billion available for 2025.
The Assembly sanctioned the necessary funds to sustain key activities in the realms of peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights, in line with the ongoing UN80 reform initiative aimed at optimizing administrative workflows as the organization approaches its 80th anniversary.
UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan enlightened delegates that the Secretariat produced the draft budget in a notably short timeframe of under six weeks, addressing a multitude of inquiries from oversight bodies and member states. He noted that the consensus achieved on the budget underscores the strength of the UN’s budgeting framework.
Despite the budget’s approval, Ramanathan warned that significant challenges lie ahead during its execution, urging member states to ensure timely payments of their assessed contributions to mitigate cash-flow challenges. As it enters 2026 with a reduced budget and a projected 19% workforce reduction, the UN remains committed to fulfilling its primary mission amid increasing financial pressures.
