Tragic Death of Woman in Uncommon Mountain Lion Assault in Colorado

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Colorado, USA:

A woman has lost her life after an uncommon mountain lion attack on a well-trafficked hiking trail in northern Colorado, potentially marking the state's first fatal incident with such wildlife in over two decades.

The event transpired around 12:15 pm on New Year's Day along the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County, as reported by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials.

Hikers in the area observed a mountain lion near a person lying still on the ground. Attempts to scare off the big cat included throwing rocks, which successfully prompted its retreat into the surrounding wilderness.

“One of the witnesses was a physician and could not find a pulse,” stated CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose, confirming that the woman was declared dead at the scene.

Emergency Response and Search Efforts

In response to the incident, a sizable operation was initiated, involving wildlife officers, sheriff's deputies, park police, and volunteer firefighters. A state wildlife biologist aiding in an annual deer survey participated in the search from a helicopter.

Specially trained scent-tracking hounds were also utilized, a method that authorities say effectively helps locate the involved animals.

Mountain Lions Euthanized

Wildlife officials stated that two mountain lions were euthanized during the investigation. One lion was shot at the scene but evaded immediate capture, only to be tracked and killed later. A second lion, found nearby, was also euthanized according to state policies that necessitate the removal of wildlife involved in attacks on humans for public safety considerations.

Although two animals were culled, officials emphasized that mountain lions are typically solitary, suggesting that only one lion was likely accountable for the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

Pathologists will perform necropsies on both animals to investigate for neurological diseases like rabies and to establish the presence of human DNA. Meanwhile, the county coroner will release the victim's name and officially determine the cause of death.

Infrequent Yet Serious Events

CPW wants to highlight that mountain lion confrontations with humans are extremely rare. Since 1990, Colorado has documented only 28 such incidents, with the last confirmed fatality occurring in 1999.

Officials noted that mountains lions are more likely to be seen in the winter months as they follow deer and elk to lower altitudes in search of sustenance.

Public Safety Recommendations

Authorities advise hikers to stay vigilant and to take steps to protect themselves if encountering a mountain lion. Recommended actions include making loud noises, raising arms or objects overhead to seem larger, maintaining eye contact, and gradually backing away without showing your back.

Mountain Lion Population in Colorado

Colorado hosts an estimated 3,800 to 4,400 mountain lions, not counting kittens. Once classified under big game, the species has increased since 1965 due to conservation management.

Mountain lions hold the widest geographic range of any native mammal in the Americas, extending from western Canada to Argentina. Previously widespread across the U.S., they are now primarily found in western states.

Adult mountain lions can exceed six feet in length and weigh over 130 pounds, predominantly hunting deer using stealth, often attacking from elevated positions.
