The shooter associated with the tragic killings at Brown University and MIT has been disclosed to have meticulously planned the attack for an extended period, as indicated by new findings from the US Department of Justice.
Authorities have identified the individual as Claudio Neves Valente, 48, a former student of Brown and a national from Portugal. His body was located on December 18 in a storage unit in New Hampshire, just days following a violent rampage that sent shockwaves through educational circles in Massachusetts.
The spree of violence commenced on December 13 when Neves Valente opened fire in an engineering building at Brown University, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others. This incident led to significant security measures, including extensive searches and campus lockdowns. Two days later, he fatally shot MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his Brookline residence.
While examining the storage facility where his remains were discovered, FBI officials unearthed an electronic device with several brief videos. In these recordings, recorded post-attack, Neves Valente spoke in Portuguese, admitting his responsibilities for the heinous acts.
Transcripts from the Justice Department reveal that he stated he had been “planning the Brown University shooting for a long time”, having finalized his plans over a span of at least six academic semesters. Although he mentioned past interactions with the professor in Portugal, he did not clarify his reasons for targeting Brown University or MIT.
In the videos, Neves Valente expressed a lack of regret for his actions, claiming that he had not received any sincere apologies during his life. He criticized the way he executed the attacks, calling them “a little incompetent,” yet he asserted that “at least something was done.”
He claimed his aim was to conclude matters on his own terms and resolve his suffering. His statements revealed a cold and defiant demeanor, disregarding any potential condemnation of his actions.
Neves Valente also discussed his rental of the storage space, which he had maintained for three years. A confrontation at Brown became pivotal for investigators, as a witness recognized him from several encounters leading up to the shooting.
The witness had shared insights on platforms like Reddit, including thoughts on a gray Nissan linked to the shooter. Others encouraged the witness to alert law enforcement, which he ultimately did, leading to the crucial connection of a vehicle to the suspect.
In his videos, Neves Valente reflected on how a license plate confrontation surprised him and commented on the duration it took police to track him down.
Valente moved to the United States around 25 years ago to pursue physics at Brown University, from where he left in 2001. He achieved legal permanent residency in 2017 and was last residing in Miami.
In the recordings, he conveyed an indifference toward both Portugal and the United States, emphasizing that he had lived without concern for his location. These videos, now part of the federal investigation, reveal a chilling insight into the mind of an individual who premeditated violence and documented his own narrative of the events that culminated in a tragic loss of life.
