US Airstrike Targets ISIS in Nigeria: A New Phase in Counterterrorism

US Airstrike Targets ISIS in Nigeria: A New Phase in Counterterrorism

Post by : Meena Hassan

A targeted US military airstrike struck suspected ISIS operatives in Nigeria's northwestern Sokoto state, resulting in the deaths of several militants and showcasing an intensified collaboration with Nigerian authorities. This event signifies a notable escalation in counterterrorism efforts between Washington and Abuja.

US Africa Command has verified the operation, emphasizing that the strike specifically targeted known ISIS locations used for planning attacks throughout the region. Initially, reports indicated that the operation was conducted at Nigeria's request, but this mention was later omitted. Nevertheless, Nigerian officials affirmed that this action falls within ongoing cooperative security measures that involve intelligence sharing and strategic planning.

The Nigerian foreign ministry noted that these airstrikes are part of a broader partnership with the United States to confront armed extremist elements active in the northwest and northeast. This collaboration has enabled accurate strikes on terrorist targets, thereby significantly compromising their operational capabilities.

Pentagon-released footage showed the launch of at least one missile from a US warship. A US defense official confirmed multiple ISIS members were targeted at established camps believed to be key to the group's operations in Nigeria.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude toward the Nigerian government for its cooperation and hinted at potential further actions, indicating ongoing military efforts against extremist groups in the area.

This airstrike arrives amid increasing security anxieties in Nigeria. Earlier on Thursday, a suicide explosion resulted in five fatalities and 35 injuries in the northeast, underscoring the persistent threat from militant factions despite extensive military interventions.

In recent weeks, the United States has heightened surveillance across Nigeria, conducting intelligence-gathering missions that are believed to have contributed significantly to pinpointing militant locations and facilitating this latest strike.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a Christmas address, called for peace and unity among diverse religious communities, reaffirming his dedication to safeguarding all Nigerians from violence and supporting religious freedom across the nation.

The airstrike also follows former US President Donald Trump's stern warnings in late October, claiming that Christianity is facing an "existential threat" in Nigeria. Trump had threatened military intervention if the Nigerian government did not act against violence targeting Christian communities. He applauded the airstrike in a Christmas statement issued while in Florida.

Just last week, US forces also engaged in extensive strikes against ISIS locations in Syria after a suspected militant attack against American personnel there, demonstrating a broader campaign against the group across various regions.

This recent operation in Nigeria signifies a more assertive US stance against extremist threats in Africa and reflects a growing military partnership with Nigeria to combat terrorism and restore regional stability.
