US Executes Precision Airstrikes Against ISIS in Syria Following Deadly Assault

Post by : Meena Hassan

On Friday, the United States military launched a series of significant airstrikes throughout central Syria, striking numerous Islamic State locations as a direct response to an attack that resulted in the deaths of American personnel, according to US officials.

This operation, dubbed “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” aimed at ISIS militants, weapon caches, and essential logistical networks. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the operations, categorizing them as a resolute act of retaliation instead of the commencement of a wider conflict.

“This does not signify the start of a war,” Hegseth stated, emphasizing that the mission was designed to bring rapid justice to those accountable. He reassured that US forces would persist in countering threats to American servicemen wherever necessary.

These strikes followed a violent incident last weekend near the ancient city of Palmyra, where a perpetrator attacked a combined convoy of US and Syrian forces. The assault claimed the lives of two US Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter, while three additional soldiers were wounded. The assailant was neutralized on-site.

According to US officials, intelligence indicated that the assailant was linked to the Islamic State, even though he had purported ties to Syrian security forces. Local Syrian authorities later indicated that he had extremist leanings.

Currently, the United States has approximately 1,000 troops in Syria, primarily focused on curbing the resurgence of Islamic State. In recent months, coalition forces have intensified air and ground operations against remaining ISIS elements, frequently collaborating with Syrian security units.

The political climate in Syria has changed considerably since former president Bashar al-Assad was ousted last year amidst an extended civil conflict. The new government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has committed to working alongside international initiatives against ISIS and has recently formalized cooperation with the US-led coalition.

Washington officials emphasized that these recent airstrikes were precisely targeted and aimed at deterring further assaults while upholding regional stability.
