U.S. Halts $3M Acquisition of Defense Assets by Chinese Firm

U.S. Halts $3M Acquisition of Defense Assets by Chinese Firm

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a significant action aimed at protecting U.S. national security, President Donald Trump has officially blocked the $3 million purchase of Emcore’s aerospace and defense assets by HieFo Corp. HieFo, a photonics company based in the U.S., is reportedly controlled by an individual from the People's Republic of China, raising substantial security alarms for the U.S. government.

On Friday, the White House issued a directive expressing serious concerns regarding the proposed 2024 deal, which involves transferring specialized aerospace and defense technologies from Emcore to HieFo. The order outlines the potential risks this acquisition poses to the national security interests of the United States. This apprehension is primarily due to the Chinese national holding a controlling interest, which raises the specter of foreign influence on sensitive U.S. defense capabilities.

Emcore, situated in New Jersey, is recognized for its cutting-edge aerospace and defense technology solutions, making it a pivotal entity in the U.S. defense sector. The proposed deal with HieFo triggered alarms among U.S. security officials, who worry that such a transaction could grant China access to critical advancements in American defense technologies.

This presidential action underscores the ongoing scrutiny concerning Chinese investments in crucial U.S. sectors, particularly those connected to national security and defense. It reflects the heightened awareness within the U.S. government to curb foreign entities, especially those affiliated with China, from gaining dominance over vital American technologies.
