In a significant response to last month’s deadly ambush that resulted in the deaths of two US soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra, the United States has intensified its military intervention in Syria by launching a series of airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS) group.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the strikes commenced around 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday, targeting several IS positions across Syria. This operation was executed in coordination with various allied forces, although a complete roster of participants was not released. The Jordanian military confirmed its involvement in the operation.
This military action is part of a broader initiative endorsed by President Donald Trump, aimed at responding decisively to the Palmyra attack, which claimed the lives of Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat.
CENTCOM stated, “Our message remains unequivocal: if you threaten our military personnel, we will pursue and eliminate you on any terrain, no matter your efforts to escape justice.”
Just prior to these airstrikes, Syrian officials announced the detainment of the military leader in charge of IS operations across the Levant, signifying another pivotal moment in the conflict against the extremist group.
The Trump administration has labeled this campaign as Operation Hawkeye Strike, a determined effort to dismantle remaining IS structures in Syria. Both Torres-Tovar and Howard were members of the Iowa National Guard.
The operation was initially set in motion on December 19, deploying a significant wave of airstrikes that targeted approximately 70 locations throughout central Syria, focusing on IS operational infrastructure, logistics centers, and arms depots.
Historically, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have served as the primary ally for the U.S. in the struggle against IS in Syria. However, following the removal of former Syrian President Bashar Assad in December 2024, the U.S. has increasingly coordinated efforts with the Syrian central government in Damascus.
Syria has also recently aligned with the global coalition combating the Islamic State, indicating a broader regional commitment to countering extremism.
Despite significant territorial losses in recent years, IS continues to execute deadly operations and presents a relentless threat, necessitating ongoing military efforts from the U.S. and its allies to prevent the resurgence of the group.
