US Allocates $45 Million to Bolster Peace Agreement Between Cambodia and Thailand

US Allocates $45 Million to Bolster Peace Agreement Between Cambodia and Thailand

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The United States has revealed a $45 million aid initiative aimed at assisting Cambodia and Thailand in implementing a peace deal intended to cease recent border violence. This funding will facilitate the execution of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords and aid in restoring stability, safety, and development in the affected regions.

A high-ranking US official for East Asia emphasized that this support underscores Washington's dedication to fostering peace and stability in Southeast Asia. The funds are designated for various critical areas, concentrating on border security, humanitarian relief, and crime prevention impacting citizens in both nations.

Of the total fund, $15 million is allocated for initiatives to stabilize the border, helping local communities recover from the conflict and providing assistance to individuals displaced by the clashes. Numerous families across the border have faced significant losses, including access to essential services and means of livelihood during the turmoil.

An additional $10 million will focus on the clearance of landmines and unexploded ordnance left in the wake of recent fighting. These hidden hazards represent grave risks to civilian safety, particularly for farmers and children, making their removal a crucial step towards long-term peace.

The remaining $20 million will address joint efforts to eliminate illegal scam operations, drug trafficking, and associated crimes. The US has prioritized combating online scam networks in Southeast Asia, particularly given the global targeting of victims, including Americans.

Following weeks of severe fighting, Cambodia and Thailand reached the peace deal late last year. The clashes resulted in over 100 fatalities and displaced more than 500,000 people. The collapse of a previous ceasefire rendered this latest agreement particularly significant.

Thailand has historically been a close ally of the United States, while Washington is strengthening its relationship with Cambodia. US officials assert that aiding both nations in adhering to the peace agreement will not only lessen the likelihood of future hostilities but also foster economic growth and enhance regional trust.

As representatives of the three nations convene to plan the next steps, this aid initiative is seen as a constructive measure to transform a fragile ceasefire into enduring peace. The success of this initiative could establish a framework for resolving other conflicts in the Indo-Pacific area.
