The United States and Iran have announced a breakthrough peace agreement that could bring an end to more than three months of conflict in the Middle East. The agreement, initially revealed through mediation efforts led by Pakistan, has now been acknowledged by both Washington and Tehran. Officials say the accord is designed to establish an immediate and permanent halt to military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon.
According to Iranian officials, the formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 19. The agreement creates a 60-day framework for further negotiations focused on unresolved issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and regional security arrangements. Both sides have described the deal as an important first step toward long-term stability.
Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that the memorandum of understanding includes commitments to end hostilities immediately and initiate discussions on a final agreement after verification of US obligations. Tehran has emphasized that the deal does not represent unconditional trust and that implementation of all commitments will be closely monitored.
US President Donald Trump welcomed the agreement and announced authorization for the reopening of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world's most critical energy routes, handling nearly 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the conflict disrupted commercial traffic. The reopening is expected to gradually restore confidence in international energy markets.
Reports from Iranian media suggest the draft memorandum contains provisions related to sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets, reconstruction support and commitments regarding future military deployments. However, the full details of the agreement have not yet been officially released, and several elements remain subject to further negotiations over the coming weeks.
The international community has largely welcomed the announcement. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the development as a significant step toward peace, while several European countries signaled their willingness to support diplomatic efforts and review sanctions policies if progress continues. Financial markets also reacted positively, with oil prices declining and major stock indexes posting gains.
Despite the optimism, analysts caution that substantial challenges remain. Negotiations over Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles, future sanctions, and long-term security guarantees are expected to be complex. Nevertheless, the planned Geneva signing has raised hopes that diplomacy could succeed where months of military confrontation failed.
