Extraordinary 416-Mile Drive for S. Jaishankar During US Shutdown

Post by : Meena Hassan

Facing a government shutdown in September that grounded commercial flights, security personnel arranged an exceptional 416-mile road trip for External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This strategic journey ensured his timely attendance at a crucial meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York.

As detailed in a recent report by the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service, all air travel was halted during the shutdown, leaving land travel as the sole alternative. A dedicated team of 27 security agents, including personnel from the Dignitary Protection Division, organized the logistical details.

The motorcade commenced at the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge located on the US-Canada border, where US security officials took custody of the minister from their Canadian counterparts. They then embarked on a seven-hour journey through upstate New York, meticulously preparing for winter hazards like freezing conditions and reduced visibility. To enhance safety and efficiency, drivers were periodically rotated.

During the journey, the security team experienced a moment of alarm when an explosive detection dog from a sheriff’s office alerted to the armored vehicle. After securing the area and conducting a thorough check, it was confirmed there was no danger, allowing the trip to continue promptly.

Upon reaching New York City, a security agent encountered a woman injured from a hit-and-run incident. This agent acted swiftly to provide aid while ensuring city police and fire responders could clear the scene. Fortunately, this incident did not interfere with the minister’s security or schedule.

The execution of this mission also included collaboration between India’s UN mission, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and US border officials to guarantee seamless transitions at the border. The State Department highlighted the success of this operation in enabling the minister to fulfill his UN commitments despite the complications posed by the government shutdown.

The Diplomatic Security Service plays a vital role in safeguarding American diplomats and visiting dignitaries, exemplified by their efforts during this high-profile operation.
