Delcy Rodriguez Assumes Role as Interim President of Venezuela

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Caracas experienced a pivotal political shift on Monday as Delcy Rodriguez took the oath to become Venezuela's interim president. This significant change came just days following the dramatic seizure of President Nicolas Maduro by US forces, who extradited him to New York on drug trafficking charges, an event that shocked the nation and attracted global attention.

At the National Assembly, Rodriguez pledged to assume her role “in the name of all Venezuelans,” during a ceremony that was marked by heightened security due to the prevailing tensions in the capital. Lawmakers from the ruling party expressed their support, while chants for Maduro reverberated within the assembly.

The National Assembly condemned Maduro's apprehension, deeming it a violation of Venezuela's sovereignty, while affirming their backing for Rodriguez, who previously served as Maduro’s vice president. Her brother, Jorge Rodriguez, was re-elected as the speaker, solidifying their family’s influence over both the executive and legislative sectors.

Outside the assembly, thousands of supporters rallied, brandishing flags and calling for Maduro’s release. Protesters echoed slogans from his recent campaign, asserting that Venezuela would resist foreign intervention. Many condemned the US actions as an unacceptable intrusion, irrespective of the allegations against Maduro.

Visibly emotional, Rodriguez addressed the assembly, lamenting what she termed the “kidnapping” of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, both facing charges in the US. She reaffirmed Maduro's status as Venezuela’s legitimate leader, despite her new responsibilities.

Tensions escalated later in the day when unidentified drones were spotted above the presidential palace, prompting security forces to fire shots, which created alarm across the city. Government officials assured that the situation was under control, yet the incident heightened concerns about instability in the region.

Nicolas Maduro Guerra, Maduro's son, addressed the parliament and supporters, vowing loyalty to Rodriguez and expressing optimism for his parents' return, claiming he was still in indirect contact with his father, thus reinforcing the message of unity within the ruling faction.

The Supreme Court's directive for Rodriguez to assume the presidency in acting capacity was endorsed by military leadership. While she expressed an openness to engage with Washington, US President Donald Trump cautioned her of potential repercussions should she fail to comply with Washington's expectations regarding political reforms and oil policy.

As Venezuela navigates this uncertain path, Caracas remains restless, the political landscape has shifted, and divisions within the nation intensify over the future.
