Venezuela Releases 187 Detainees Amid US Pressure Post-Election

Venezuela Releases 187 Detainees Amid US Pressure Post-Election

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a significant move, Venezuela’s government has liberated 88 additional individuals linked to the protests that followed the July 2024 elections. This marks the second major wave of detainee releases in the span of two weeks, following the prior release of 99 individuals on December 26, making the total 187 within the recent timeframe.

An official statement from the government highlighted that these actions are part of a “thorough review process” initiated by President Nicolas Maduro. They emphasized that the review is still underway and aims to assess the cases of those detained during the post-election disruptions.

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, a Venezuelan NGO, confirmed that they had verified the release of at least 55 individuals, most of whom were released from Tocoron prison, located in central Venezuela.

However, some NGOs have raised doubts about the accuracy of the official numbers, questioning whether the actual number released is as high as claimed by the government. Independent estimates suggest that around 900 political prisoners still remain incarcerated in Venezuela, including those detained prior to the elections.

The Venezuelan government insists that it does not detain political prisoners, but rather individuals accused of threatening the country's stability through illicit actions. This claim continues to be a contentious issue between the government and various human rights organizations.

These releases are occurring against a backdrop of mounting pressure from the United States. The Trump administration has urged President Maduro to step down, while the US has been increasing its military presence in the Caribbean and has conducted operations targeting drug trafficking vessels near Venezuela's waters, as well as seizing two Venezuelan crude oil tankers, escalating diplomatic tensions.
