Vietnam's PM Accelerates Housing Reconstruction Post-Flood Ahead of Tết

Post by : Meena Hassan

Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has emphasized the urgency of advancing the Quang Trung Campaign, a significant initiative aimed at restoring housing in central Vietnam in light of the recent floods, all in preparation for Tết 2026 and the upcoming 14th National Party Congress.

During an online conference with various governmental bodies and provincial representatives, the Prime Minister insisted that all storm-affected dwellings in Vietnam must be completely reconstructed or repaired, ensuring that no household is left vulnerable during the Lunar New Year celebrations.

Recent reports on Vietnam's disaster recovery indicate that severe flooding in central Vietnam at the end of 2025 has led to significant destruction across regions from Quảng Trị to Lâm Đồng. A reported total of 1,597 homes were either destroyed or washed away, necessitating reconstruction efforts, while 34,759 houses remain structurally impaired and call for immediate repairs.

In response to the crisis, the government initiated the Quang Trung Campaign, rallying ministries, local authorities, the private sector, NGOs, and the military to expedite the rebuilding of flood-impacted homes in the affected areas.

Authorities have confirmed that all 34,759 damaged residences have been successfully repaired, achieving the objectives outlined in the national housing recovery program. For the homes that require new construction, 1,046 out of the 1,597 structures are now complete, representing 65.5% progress, while remaining projects are between 60% and 80% finished.

Local officials stated that vital infrastructure such as electricity, clean water, telecommunications, and transport has been restored in affected zones. No significant issues have been encountered regarding funding or construction material availability as part of the Vietnam flood recovery initiative.

Most provinces have committed to finalizing all reconstruction work by January 15, aligning with preparations for the National Party Congress. A handful of families in Lâm Đồng and Đắk Lắk have chosen larger housing designs, which could take additional time, but completion is still anticipated before Tết 2026.

In closing the meeting, PM Phạm Minh Chính commended the effective collaboration among ministries and local governance, highlighting that families whose homes have been repaired have started to regain stability in their daily lives following the storm damages.

Reiterating the government’s dedication to disaster aid and housing recovery in Vietnam, the Prime Minister called for authorities to pool maximum resources, particularly from the military and socio-political organizations, ensuring every citizen finds shelter.

Beyond housing efforts, he instructed localities to persist in enhancing environmental cleanliness and transport infrastructure while assessing vital needs of residents to allow families to fully embrace Tết 2026.

Additionally, the Prime Minister proposed financial support of VNĐ5 million for each of the 34,759 households with completed repairs, and VNĐ10 million for nearly 5,000 households nationwide that lost their homes, aiding their recovery under the national rebuilding initiative.

Describing the Quang Trung Campaign as a compassionate and community-centric approach, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of transparency, stringent oversight, and acknowledgment of exceptional contributors while integrating lessons learned from this recovery effort for future disaster management strategies.
