Wiz Khalifa Receives 9-Month Jail Sentence in Romania for Drug Offense

Wiz Khalifa Receives 9-Month Jail Sentence in Romania for Drug Offense

Post by : Meena Hassan

The Romanian judiciary has sentenced rapper Wiz Khalifa to a nine-month prison term stemming from a drug-related incident tied to a music festival appearance last year. The decision has gained international attention due to Khalifa's significant celebrity status.

Cameron Jibril Thomaz, professionally known as Wiz Khalifa, was found guilty of possessing cannabis for personal use without authorization. The offense occurred during the popular “Beach, Please!” festival in July 2024, located in Costinești, Romania. Investigators reported that Khalifa had over 18 grams of cannabis and was observed consuming it on stage.

In a public statement, Khalifa addressed the debacle, expressing that he never meant to disrespect Romanian law and thanking local authorities for their conduct. He also conveyed regrets about the misunderstanding surrounding his stage performance.

The Constanța Court of Appeal stated that this ruling serves as a deterrent to prevent potential influences on youth by public figures, emphasizing accountability for celebrities whose actions may encourage illegal behaviors.

A previous court ruling had merely imposed a financial fine rather than jail time, but prosecutors appealed citing the serious nature of the incident and its public visibility. The appeal succeeded, resulting in the nine-month prison sentence.

With Khalifa being a U.S. citizen, uncertainties remain regarding the enforcement of the sentence in Romania. Romanian officials have yet to clarify if there will be any extradition proceedings or alternative legal actions taken. This case underscores the rigorous application of Romanian drug laws, irrespective of an individual's celebrity status.
