Tragic Boat Capsizing in Yobe, Nigeria: 25 Confirmed Dead, 14 Missing

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a tragic incident, a passenger boat capsized in Yobe State, Nigeria, claiming the lives of at least 25 individuals, marking one of the year's most devastating water-related accidents in the area. This incident occurred on Saturday evening as a group returning from a bustling market day faced this calamity.

The vessel, a large wooden canoe, had set off from Adiyani village in Jigawa State and was on its way to Garbi in Yobe State when it capsized shortly before 8 p.m. local time while it was navigating the river, sending all aboard into the water.

Reports from local authorities indicated that the canoe was loaded with 52 passengers. Of these, 13 were rescued, while 25 bodies have been recovered. Thirteen individuals remain unaccounted for, prompting ongoing search operations that extend into the night and through Sunday, supported by divers, volunteers, and security personnel from surrounding regions.

Community members revealed that many of the deceased were market traders who were traveling home together after a long day. Alarm arose among family members when the boat did not arrive as expected, leading to a search that uncovered the overturned canoe along the route.

According to police, initial investigations indicate the boat capsized due to water leakage and likely overloading. Safety regulations prohibiting nighttime travel on waterways were reportedly ignored. If the boat's driver is located, he may face legal repercussions for negligence.

Boat accidents are a common occurrence in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where rivers serve as primary transportation routes. Substandard safety measures, overcrowding, and risky nighttime voyages continue to endanger lives. A similar event in Niger State earlier this year resulted in numerous casualties, underscoring the persistent threat to river travelers nationwide.

As families in Yobe and Jigawa states grieve their losses, rescue teams remain on-site, resolute in their mission to locate the missing and provide some measure of closure to the affected communities.
