Tragic Fall Claims Life of Young Woman at Abandoned Film Site

Post by : Meena Hassan

Authorities have confirmed the death of a 19-year-old woman who fell from the roof of a five-story abandoned structure in Atlanta, Georgia, once featured in Netflix’s popular series Stranger Things.

The incident occurred around 1 am on December 19 at the Briarcliff campus of Emory University. Known as Building A, it previously belonged to the Georgia Mental Health Institute and has also been part of The Vampire Diaries. Despite its cinematic significance, officials warn that the building has long been deemed unsafe and access is restricted.

Police identified the victim as Leah Palmirotto, who reportedly entered the hazardous site with friends by climbing over a chain-link fence. Numerous signs clearly indicated that the area was off-limits.

Initial police investigations suggest Leah and her friends entered the derelict building out of curiosity. It is believed that she may have slipped in the dark or stepped onto a fragile part of the building, resulting in the tragic fall.

Constructed in the 1960s, Emory University took possession of the building in the 1990s. Although there were plans for demolition in 2022 to construct a senior living facility, the building still stands unused and marked as dangerous due to deteriorating floors, poor illumination, and hidden hazards.

In recent years, the once-prominent site attracted curious fans following its appearance as Hawkins National Laboratory in Stranger Things. Its dilapidated condition not only made it appealing for filming but also increased the likelihood of trespassing incidents.

Todd Palmirotto Jr., Leah’s father, remembered her as an adventurous and vibrant young woman. In his heartfelt message, he expressed hopes for a quick passing and urged others to stay clear of abandoned sites, emphasizing the inherent dangers.

Emory University’s police department is actively pursuing an investigation into the details surrounding Leah Palmirotto’s untimely death.
