Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Monday that discussions involving Ukraine, the United States, and European partners are approaching a significant resolution, bringing cautious hope for an end to the nearly four-year conflict with Russia.
During a meeting with Ukrainian diplomats, Zelenskiy described the negotiations as “very close to achieving a real result,” emphasizing joint efforts between Kyiv and Washington with strong backing from European allies.
High-Level Negotiation Series
Rustem Umerov, a senior official, has been spearheading the discussions on Ukraine's behalf, engaging in extensive meetings with US and European officials, with many discussions occurring in Florida recently.
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, representing President Vladimir Putin, has been engaged in separate discussions with American negotiators in the same locale.
Both Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed that their negotiation teams concluded talks and were returning to their nations on Monday to update their respective leaderships.
20-Point Proposal from the US
Zelenskiy stated that the negotiations primarily revolve around a 20-point plan proposed by US officials, which has been a topic of discussion for several weeks due to earlier critiques that it favored Moscow too much.
“The plan is not flawless, but it exists,” Zelenskiy remarked, indicating that while compromises are being considered, there are still red lines established by both sides.
Discussions also include vital long-term security assurances for Ukraine to prevent further Russian military actions post-conflict, along with strategies for Ukraine’s economic recovery and reconstruction.
“The foundational elements of all documents are prepared,” noted Zelenskiy. “While some matters remain unacceptable for us, I believe there are issues the Russians are unwilling to concede as well.”
Continued Pressure on Russia is Essential
The US negotiations are directed by Steve Witkoff, an envoy from President Donald Trump, alongside Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
In his video address, Zelenskiy underscored that the primary question now is whether Washington can encourage a genuine response from Moscow, indicating Russia’s readiness to abandon ongoing hostility.
He stressed the importance of sustained international pressure on the Kremlin, which includes intensified sanctions and efforts to limit Russia's oil revenues.
“Reducing the price of Russian oil, imposing stringent global sanctions, and maintaining pressure are crucial to convince even the most obstinate parties,” Zelenskiy mentioned, noting that significant measures have already been implemented this year to diminish funding for Russia’s military campaign.
While no conclusive agreement has been reached, Kyiv's tone indicates that diplomatic efforts have entered a pivotal stage, as all parties explore whether the current momentum can transform into enduring peace.
