Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has categorically dismissed Russia's accusations that Ukraine executed a drone strike on one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's residences. Zelensky criticized Moscow for orchestrating false narratives aimed at hindering ongoing peace discussions.
In a statement, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed Kyiv had launched 91 long-range drones in a synchronized overnight offensive targeting Putin's residence in the Novgorod region of northwest Russia. Lavrov maintained that all drones were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defenses, with no casualties reported.
Lavrov cautioned that, owing to what he termed the “final degeneration” of Ukraine's leadership, Russia might reassess its position in future peace negotiations. Nevertheless, he affirmed that Russia remains committed to talks with the United States.
Zelensky dismissed these claims as “standard Russian fabrications,” meant to legitimize ongoing military actions against Ukraine. He highlighted Russia’s past attacks on government institutions in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian leader also encouraged the international community to speak out against Russia’s attempts to derail peace efforts. He emphasized the crucial role of global support in securing a sustainable peace.
These assertions emerged soon after peace negotiations between the US and Ukraine in Florida, where Zelensky and the US President discussed a revised framework to resolve the conflict. Zelensky expressed optimism that the war could conclude by 2026, contingent on continued US support.
Zelensky expressed skepticism regarding Putin's commitment to peace, asserting his distrust of the Russian leader and his belief that Putin seeks to undermine Ukraine's success.
On security assurances, Zelensky disclosed that the US had offered Ukraine guarantees spanning 15 years, with a deal reportedly close to completion. However, significant issues like territorial disputes and the status of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and Donbas region remain contentious.
At present, Russia holds around 75% of Donetsk and nearly all of Luhansk, two regions that make up Donbas. Moscow has dismissed crucial components of the proposed peace framework, complicating the prospects for resolution.
After the US-Ukraine discussions, the White House communicated a “positive call” between the US President and Putin. A Kremlin advisor noted that Putin expressed anxiety about the alleged drone strike, which followed what the US deemed a successful round of negotiations.
The US President expressed shock and anger upon learning of the incident, cautioning that it might affect the US's response to Zelensky. Initially uncertain, he later confirmed receiving information about the attack from Putin, stating that investigations would be initiated.
