Zohran Mamdani has been elected as New York City's first Muslim mayor. At 34 years old, he will become the youngest person to hold the office in more than a century when he is sworn in on January 1, 2026, signaling a notable generational change in the city’s leadership.
Mamdani’s campaign gained national attention for its progressive agenda, while his wife, Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji, has kept a relatively low public profile throughout the run-up to the election.
The pair first connected on the dating app Hinge in 2021. They became engaged in October 2024 and held a nikah ceremony in December 2024 in Dubai, where Duwaji spent much of her childhood and where several family members still live.
The Dubai event took place on the rooftop of Vida Creek Harbour with views of the Burj Khalifa. Organizers styled the space as a white garden, featuring ivory roses, lisianthus and fresh greenery against the evening skyline. For the nikah, Duwaji wore a silver-toned white gown and Mamdani chose a navy blue kurta, blending formal elegance with cultural touches.
After the Dubai celebration, the couple completed a modest courthouse ceremony in February 2025 at the Lower Manhattan city clerk’s office. They later held a private three-day reception in July 2025 at Mamdani’s family estate in Uganda, bringing together close relatives and friends.
Mamdani comes from a prominent multicultural background. He is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan academic of Indian heritage—an upbringing that has informed his international outlook and public service approach.
As Mamdani prepares for the mayoralty, observers have noted the historic nature of his win. Beyond the milestone of religious representation, his election reflects shifting demographics and the ascent of younger figures in city politics.
The couple’s multiple celebrations—across Dubai, New York and Uganda—illustrate a modern mix of tradition and global lifestyle, underscoring their international connections and personal tastes.
With his inauguration scheduled for January 1, 2026, Mamdani is set to bring a youthful, diverse and forward-oriented perspective to City Hall.
