Amazon, the global e-commerce and technology giant, is facing a major leadership change in its devices and services division. Rob Williams, the Vice President of device software and services, has decided to retire from Amazon at the end of 2025. Williams is also a member of the company’s elite S-team, a special advisory group that works closely with CEO Andy Jassy.
Key Leadership Change
Williams has played a major role in shaping the software and experiences of Amazon’s devices, including Echo speakers, Kindle e-readers, and Fire TV sets. Panos Panay, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of devices and services, praised Williams for his contributions.
“Rob has had a big impact on the software and experiences of nearly all of the products we’ve created and shipped,” Panay said in an internal memo. Williams will remain an advisor to Panay and on the S-team through the end of 2025, ensuring a smooth transition.
Team Reorganization
Alongside Williams’ departure, Amazon is consolidating several teams within the devices unit. The Alexa Smart Vehicle team will now be part of the broader Alexa group. Tapas Roy, who previously oversaw Fire TV product and engineering, has been promoted to Williams’ former position.
These changes come just days after Amazon’s annual devices and services showcase, where the company introduced new products, including updated Echo speakers, color Kindle e-readers, and Fire TV sets with better screen quality.
Challenges in the Devices Unit
Amazon’s devices and services division has faced multiple challenges in recent years. The unit has experienced losses and undergone rounds of layoffs as it works to streamline products. A multi-year project to update Alexa with embedded AI has been slow, and the division has yet to reach clear profitability.
Additionally, Amazon is overhauling Fire tablets to use Android operating software for the first time, aiming to improve performance and user experience.
Leadership Impact
The departure of an S-team member is rare at Amazon. The S-team is considered a badge of honor, giving unique access to the CEO and influencing major company decisions. Williams joined the 29-member team in late 2022 and has worked at Amazon for 12 years.
Williams stated that he had been planning his exit all year but wanted to stay to see the recent device launches. He did not disclose his plans beyond 2025.
What This Means for Amazon
Amazon’s devices division will continue to face challenges as it pushes new products and navigates a competitive technology market. Leadership changes and team consolidations may help streamline operations, focus on profitability, and support innovation in AI and other key areas.
The coming months will show how the company adapts to these changes while maintaining growth in its devices and services business.
