Dubai Launches ‘Skills for Life’ Initiative for Future Learning

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has announced the launch of a new and comprehensive education initiative titled ‘Skills for Life’.

The programme is designed to strengthen the overall development of learners in Dubai by equipping them with essential life skills required in a rapidly evolving global environment. It will be implemented starting from the 2026–27 academic year and is expected to evolve over time in response to changing educational, social, and workforce needs.

Purpose of the ‘Skills for Life’ Initiative

The core objective of the initiative is to redefine education as a lifelong journey that goes beyond academic learning and classroom boundaries. It focuses on preparing learners not only for examinations but also for real-life challenges, personal growth, and future employment opportunities.

The programme will support learners from early childhood through adulthood, ensuring continuous development at every stage of education. It aims to help individuals build a strong foundation of practical abilities, emotional strength, and social awareness.

This initiative is aligned with Dubai’s Education 33 Strategy, which focuses on creating a future-ready education system that promotes innovation, adaptability, and lifelong learning.

Key Skills and Learning Areas

The ‘Skills for Life’ initiative includes a broad and structured range of life skills that will be integrated into learning environments and educational curricula across Dubai. These focus areas include:

  • Healthy lifestyles and nutrition: Encouraging physical wellbeing and informed eating habits
  • Financial and consumer literacy: Helping learners understand money management, budgeting, and responsible consumption
  • Social and relationship skills: Developing communication, cooperation, empathy, and teamwork
  • Mental resilience: Building emotional strength, stress management, and psychological wellbeing
  • Digital skills and safety: Promoting responsible use of technology and digital awareness
  • Sustainability education: Encouraging environmental responsibility and awareness of global challenges
  • Independent living skills: Supporting daily life management, decision-making, and self-reliance

These skills are designed to prepare learners for a world that is increasingly shaped by technology, global connectivity, and rapid change.

Future-Ready Education Approach

The initiative places strong emphasis on preparing learners for future challenges by developing adaptability, confidence, and a sense of purpose.

It aims to ensure that students are capable of making informed choices related to education, careers, and personal life. By doing so, it supports smoother transitions between different stages of learning and employment.

‘Skills for Life’ also highlights the importance of wellbeing, sustainability, and global citizenship, ensuring learners are not only job-ready but also socially responsible and community-focused individuals.

Alignment with UAE National Education Vision

The initiative is closely aligned with the National Education Charter, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. It also supports Dubai’s broader Education 33 (E33) Strategy.

Additionally, it complements Dubai’s quality assurance standards and the Academic and Career Guidance Policy, which aim to improve the quality and consistency of education across the emirate.

This alignment ensures that the initiative supports national priorities focused on innovation, youth development, and long-term human capital growth.

Collaboration Across Society

KHDA has highlighted that effective learning extends beyond traditional classrooms. The success of the initiative will depend on collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including:

  • Schools and universities
  • Teachers and academic institutions
  • Parents and families
  • Employers and industry partners
  • Community organizations

This cooperative approach is intended to create meaningful learning experiences that connect education with real-world practice and community involvement.

Support Through Key E33 Initiatives

The ‘Skills for Life’ programme is part of several strategic Game Changer initiatives under Education 33 (E33). These include:

  • Future Astrolabe: Strengthening academic and career guidance systems within educational institutions
  • City of Students: Enhancing overall learning experiences for students across Dubai
  • Life Camps: Providing structured opportunities to develop practical life skills
  • Learn Anywhere: Improving education quality across all stages in line with international standards
  • Skills for Tomorrow: Continuously identifying emerging skills required for future careers

These initiatives work together to create a flexible, modern, and future-focused education ecosystem in Dubai.

Partnerships and Global Learning Opportunities

The initiative is also supported by both local and international partnerships. These collaborations aim to expand access to high-quality learning opportunities, particularly in non-formal education environments outside traditional classrooms.

It also supports the development of youth leadership skills and promotes globally recognized learning pathways that enhance student growth and employability.

The ‘Skills for Life’ initiative marks a significant step in Dubai’s long-term education strategy. By focusing on practical abilities, emotional development, and future readiness, it aims to prepare learners for success in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world.

With its rollout planned for the 2026–27 academic year, the programme is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of education in Dubai and strengthening the capabilities of upcoming generations.
