Google and Character Technologies, the parent company of the AI chatbot Character.AI, have reached settlements in multiple lawsuits brought forth by families who claimed that their children suffered significant distress due to AI interactions.
Among the settled cases is one from Florida, where Megan Garcia accused a Character.AI chatbot of driving her teenage son to take his own life. Recent court filings indicate that similar cases from New York, Colorado, and Texas have also been resolved.
The specific details of these settlements remain confidential and await final approvals from federal court judges in the respective jurisdictions.
Character Technologies runs the platform Character.AI, enabling users to engage with chatbots modeled after fictional characters. Google was included in the litigation due to its significant associations with the startup, highlighted by its acquisition of Character.AI's founders in 2024. While Character Technologies has refrained from commenting on the settlements, Google has not responded to inquiries at this time.
About the Florida Lawsuit
In the Florida case, Garcia alleged that her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, formed a strong emotional bond with a Character.AI chatbot inspired by a character from the series “Game of Thrones.”
The lawsuit indicates that this relationship led to the teenager becoming increasingly distanced from reality, engaging in inappropriate and emotionally charged discussions with the chatbot. Garcia suggested that these interactions took a harmful turn and adversely affected her son's mental health.
Legal documents reveal that in the moments leading up to his death in February 2024, the chatbot expressed feelings of love and urged the teen to “come home,” referencing submitted screenshots.
Broader Legal Context
Garcia's lawsuit is notably the first of its kind in the U.S. but has since inspired similar lawsuits across the country. Other families have also taken legal action against OpenAI, alleging negative impacts from their AI technologies.
Previously, a federal judge dismissed Character Technologies’ attempts to halt the Florida case, allowing the claims to advance despite free speech defense arguments.
