Iran is currently experiencing its most significant protests in several years, now stretching into their 13th day amidst an extensive internet blackout. What began as demonstrations against economic challenges has evolved into widespread demands for the dissolution of the Islamic Republic, with some protestors advocating for a return to monarchical rule. Reports indicate that at least 48 citizens and 14 security forces have lost their lives, with thousands more detained.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei labeled the protestors as "agitators" acting to cater to the United States, attributing foreign interference as a catalyst for this unrest. Concurrently, Iran addressed the United Nations Security Council, holding the US responsible for inciting disruptions and violence during these protests.
President Donald Trump issued a warning to Iran, stating they are "in big trouble" and threatened to respond forcefully if the government harms protestors, though he excluded the option of military intervention. He also acknowledged that citizens have unexpectedly gained control over some areas.
The ongoing internet disruption, which began last Thursday, has led to significant shortages, as cash machines have failed, making essential purchases nearly impossible and heightening public distress. Human rights organizations are raising alarms over amplifying violence and the potential for mass casualties.
Leaders from the UK, Germany, and France condemned the loss of life among protestors and called on Iran to honor the right to peaceful protest and uphold human rights. The United Nations reiterated these concerns, emphasizing the significance of peaceful demonstrations and the government’s duty to ensure safety.
Iranian security forces have issued stern warnings, branding protestors as "armed vandals" and threatening legal repercussions for assaults on governmental and military sites. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has announced it will persist in operations until the "total defeat" of what they classify as the adversary's schemes.
The protests have expanded nationwide, with demonstrators voicing anti-regime slogans. Reports have surfaced of fires and violent confrontations in various locations. Families of victims have emerged to confirm identities amidst strict media limitations within Iran.
This surge of protests represents the most substantial threat to the regime since the violent unrest in 2022 that followed the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody, a crisis that resulted in numerous deaths and detentions, raising fears of yet another severe crackdown.
