China’s App Store Excludes Major Gay Dating Platforms

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Apple has taken down two leading gay dating applications in China, Blued and Finka, from its local app store, following mandates from the Cyberspace Administration of China. This decision is part of Beijing’s ongoing initiatives to control online content, impacting millions who have utilized these apps to forge connections.

While the mainstream version of Blued has been removed, a "lite" variant remains available on select Chinese app marketplaces, and other dating services like Jicco and Jack’d are still operational. Blued alone boasts tens of millions of downloads, representing a vital resource for the LGBT landscape in China.

The decision has alarmed users within the community. A community member expressed, “I wish policymakers could acknowledge that love is a rare gift—not something to be shunned or silenced.” Such feelings echo broader anxiety regarding the rights and visibility of LGBT individuals in China, where advocacy groups encounter increasing resistance.

China’s stringent internet policies have historically impacted foreign applications. Well-known platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp are blocked, and Google Play is not accessible, forcing Android users to depend on domestically modified operating systems. Previously, in 2022, the US-based app Grindr was also removed from Apple’s China app store in an initiative against content viewed as “illegal and inappropriate.”

The Cyberspace Administration of China has defended these actions by invoking the necessity to “promote the standardized and healthy growth of the internet sector.” Although homosexuality was decriminalized in China in 1997, same-sex marriages remain invalid, with activism increasingly under strain.

As the online climate grows more restrictive, China’s LGBT community confronts diminishing digital spaces to interact, underlining the persistent discord between technology, law, and individual liberties.
