OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank announced on Tuesday that they will open five new artificial intelligence (AI) data centre sites in the United States. These sites are part of OpenAI’s Stargate infrastructure platform, which aims to support large-scale AI development. The new locations will add to the main campus in Abilene, Texas, and ongoing projects with CoreWeave.
Investment and Capacity Growth
The new projects will bring Stargate’s total planned capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and total investment to over $400 billion within the next three years. The companies said this expansion puts them ahead of schedule to reach a $500 billion investment goal and 10-gigawatt capacity target by the end of 2025.
Partnerships and Agreements
In July, OpenAI and Oracle agreed to develop up to 4.5 gigawatts of additional Stargate capacity. This partnership is expected to bring more than $300 billion in investment over five years. The collaboration aims to strengthen AI infrastructure across the United States and provide resources for AI research and development.
Locations of New Sites
Three of the new sites are located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a Midwest location yet to be announced. Near the Abilene campus, an additional 600 megawatts of capacity may also be added. The other two sites, developed by SoftBank and OpenAI, will scale up to 1.5 gigawatts within 18 months. One of these is in Lordstown, Ohio, where construction has already begun on a new advanced data centre expected to operate next year. The second is in Milam County, Texas, to be built with SB Energy, a SoftBank company.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The new data centre projects could create over 25,000 onsite jobs, with tens of thousands more indirectly across the country. These projects are also expected to bring significant economic benefits to local communities through infrastructure development, construction, and support services.
Purpose of the New Sites
The new AI data centres are designed to speed up AI development, improve system scalability, and reduce costs for large-scale AI applications. They will provide infrastructure for high-performance computing, cloud-based AI operations, and faster access to AI tools for research and commercial use.
Integration With Existing Infrastructure
The new Oracle-developed Stargate sites will join the existing Abilene campus, which is already active on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. This integration will help ensure seamless operations, improved performance, and efficient management of AI workloads across multiple locations.
Future Expansion Plans
These initial five sites are the first round of selections for the Stargate expansion. The companies said more US sites are still being considered as the $500 billion investment target is approached and exceeded. The continuous expansion aims to establish the United States as a global hub for advanced AI development.
Global Significance
By investing in these new AI data centres, OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank are strengthening their position in the AI sector. The expansion will support innovation, research, and commercial applications, making AI tools more widely accessible while creating economic growth and new employment opportunities.
