Russia has categorically dismissed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertions regarding U.S. dominance over Venezuela’s substantial oil reserves. Officials emphasized that investments made by Russian companies in Venezuela are legally regarded as Russian state assets and will persist as they have.
Trump’s comments suggested that the United States aimed to seize control of Venezuela's oil sector and collaborate with American firms. This statement arose following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, whom Trump has accused of grave offenses and labeled a dictator.
In retaliation, Roszarubezhneft, Russia’s state-owned oil firm, reaffirmed that all its Venezuelan assets are vested in the Russian state. The firm underscored that its operations adhere to Venezuelan legislation, international protocols, and mutual agreements established between the two nations. It also reiterated its commitment to cooperation with Venezuelan associates.
Roszarubezhneft was established in 2020 in response to U.S. sanctions impacting Russia’s oil behemoth, Rosneft, due to Venezuelan oil dealings. To safeguard its interests, Russia allocated its Venezuelan oil holdings to this newly formed entity, linked to the Ministry of Economic Development.
For many years, Russia and Venezuela have nurtured a close partnership, encompassing oil and gas ventures, military collaboration, and political backing. Moscow has frequently defended Venezuela on the international platform and supported its government amidst pressure from Western nations.
Recently, Venezuela’s National Assembly sanctioned a 15-year prolongation of alliance projects between PDVSA, the nation’s state oil company, and Roszarubezhneft. These collaborative ventures are crucial for exploiting oil fields in western Venezuela and serve the interests of both countries.
Russia’s foreign ministry has advocated for dialogue as a means to prevent confrontation. Although President Vladimir Putin has refrained from public commentary regarding Maduro’s detainment, Russian officials have urged the U.S. to eschew further escalations and pursue peaceful resolutions.
This ongoing dispute underscores escalating tensions over energy, governance, and clout in Latin America. With the world’s largest proven oil reserves, Venezuela remains a focal point in global energy narratives, amid competitive maneuvering from the U.S., Russia, and other global entities in this intricate, high-stakes scenario.
