Hodgson Issues Apology Over Remarks on Coastal First Nations Meeting

Post by : Meena Hassan

Federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson has publicly apologized to Coastal First Nations after making comments perceived as dismissive about a meeting arrangement with the group. This apology followed his earlier suggestion that alliance president Marilyn Slett could participate virtually if she could not attend in person.

The Coastal First Nations alliance comprises nine Nations along the northern British Columbia coast, steadfastly opposing the transportation of bitumen to their region. Their position has gained renewed attention after a recent agreement between the federal and Alberta governments outlining a potential route for a pipeline project.

Slett highlighted concerns regarding the meeting's timing and location, remarking that attending in person was not feasible. In response, Hodgson's comment of, “It’s called Zoom,” was met with criticism for appearing to undermine the Nation’s preference for respectful face-to-face dialogue.

The next day, Hodgson retracted his comment, recognizing it as a misjudgment. He reached out to the alliance directly to express his regret and reaffirm his willingness to meet in person at a convenient time and location.

In his public remarks, Hodgson characterized the comment as a “poor choice of words” and stressed his genuine intention to forge a constructive relationship with the alliance's leadership. He emphasized that in-person discussions are paramount for addressing concerns related to the pipeline and its broader impact on their lands, waters, and rights.

Hodgson also expressed readiness to visit the community, asserting that meaningful consultation is vital as discussions about significant energy projects unfold. As of now, Coastal First Nations representatives have not confirmed a rescheduled meeting.
