US Military Operation in Caracas Claims Lives of 47 Venezuelan Soldiers

Post by : Meena Hassan

Tensions in Latin America have escalated dramatically as a US military operation in Caracas led to the deaths of 47 Venezuelan soldiers, including nine women, as confirmed by the Venezuelan government. The Defence Ministry noted that this revised death toll reflects those who resisted the raid aimed at capturing President Nicolás Maduro.

The operation also resulted in 32 Cuban soldiers' fatalities, with Cuba asserting that they were present in Venezuela as part of their military alliance with Maduro's regime. The country has conducted public ceremonies to mourn the officers, whose remains have been transported back to Havana.

Venezuelan authorities reported over 112 injuries from the assault, which initiated with air strikes on military sites before culminating with helicopter-borne US forces attempting to seize Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, from their Caracas residence. There's currently no complete data on civilian casualties as authorities work on DNA identification.

Reactions, both regional and worldwide, have been polarized, with mass protests occurring outside the US Embassy in Havana, where thousands voiced their opposition to the deaths of Cuban personnel. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned the operation as an aggressive act and reaffirmed the government's stance against conceding political positions in talks with the US.

Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a week of mourning while engaging in high-level discussions with the CIA director regarding economic and security matters in light of the crisis.

This US operation has added strain to diplomatic relations, leading to mixed international reactions that include calls for peaceful negotiations and maintaining regional stability.
