Apple Launches $599 MacBook Neo With iPhone Chip

Apple Launches $599 MacBook Neo With iPhone Chip

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Apple on Wednesday introduced the MacBook Neo, its most affordable new laptop to date, marking a significant shift in the company’s strategy as it seeks to attract budget-conscious consumers and expand its presence in the global PC market.

Starting at $599, the MacBook Neo is the first laptop from Apple to run on a processor typically used in the company’s smartphones. The device is powered by the A18 Pro chip, similar to the processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro, highlighting Apple’s growing ability to integrate its mobile and desktop technologies.

The announcement was made during an event in New York City, where John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, described the MacBook Neo as a “totally new” product built “from the ground up.”

A strategic shift toward affordable laptops

For years, Apple’s Mac lineup has largely catered to premium buyers, with most MacBooks priced well above $1,000. The MacBook Neo represents a new attempt by the company to reach a broader audience, particularly customers who typically choose Windows laptops or Chromebooks.

The company’s largest source of revenue remains the iPhone, followed by its services business and wearable devices such as the Apple Watch. However, Mac computers play a key role in keeping users connected to Apple’s ecosystem of devices and services.

By offering a lower-priced laptop, Apple is aiming to attract students, young professionals and first-time Mac users who may not want to pay premium prices for devices like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

Design and features

Compared with other MacBook models, the Neo includes a smaller display, reduced memory capacity and brighter color options, including a new “citrus” yellow finish designed to appeal to younger buyers.

The most notable change, however, is the processor. The A18 Pro chip—originally designed for smartphones—now powers a full desktop operating system on the MacBook Neo.

According to Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at International Data Corporation, Apple’s ability to run its Mac software on a mobile chip demonstrates the advantage of controlling both hardware and software.

“They’re taking a chip that typically serves a lightweight operating system and running a much heavier one,” Ubrani said, noting that the move highlights Apple’s strength in optimizing performance across devices.

Competition in the global PC market

Apple remains a smaller player in the global PC industry compared with rivals. According to data from Gartner, Lenovo held about 27.2% of the market at the end of 2025, while Apple accounted for 9.4%.

Still, Apple’s approach to the market has traditionally focused on premium devices rather than competing on price. The MacBook Neo could help bridge that gap by offering a more affordable entry point into the Mac ecosystem, even though the device does not include a touchscreen feature that is common on many PCs.

Industry analysts expect the laptop to appeal particularly to college students and young adults who want a traditional laptop experience without the higher cost of Apple’s flagship MacBooks.

Launch amid industry challenges

The MacBook Neo arrives at a difficult time for the broader laptop industry. Rising demand for memory used in artificial intelligence data centers has reduced the supply available for consumer electronics.

Gartner estimates that PC prices could increase by around 17% in 2026, while the International Data Corporation forecasts global PC shipments may decline by 11.3% this year.

Launching a lower-cost MacBook before those expected price increases could give Apple a competitive advantage and help it gain market share, analysts say.

Alongside the MacBook Neo, Apple also unveiled updated versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, as well as new laptop processors during the same launch event.

The MacBook Neo is scheduled to go on sale on March 11, marking Apple’s latest effort to broaden its customer base while strengthening its position in the evolving laptop market.
