FERC Grants Five-Year Extension for Cameron LNG Development

FERC Grants Five-Year Extension for Cameron LNG Development

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a crucial five-year extension for Sempra Energy's Cameron LNG export terminal in Louisiana. This new timeline means the facility is set to be operational by March 16, 2033.

Cameron LNG, primarily held by Sempra Infrastructure, has been instrumental in the United States' position as the leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) since 2023. This facility plays a vital role in catering to the rising global demand for LNG and bolstering domestic energy systems.

The U.S. LNG industry has gained fresh momentum after the policy shifts during the Trump administration, which lifted the previous moratorium on new export licenses as of early 2025. This transformation has spurred investment and development, allowing U.S. projects to seize a larger share of the international market.

In October, Sempra filed for this extension, underscoring the intricate engineering and regulatory hurdles faced in constructing such a large facility. The approval allows the company essential time to ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and operational mandates without the pressure of a tight timeline.

Experts suggest that this extended timeline could enhance the stability of U.S. LNG supplies, ensure reliable exports, and fortify long-term agreements with global purchasers, solidifying America's standing in the international energy sector.
