Turkey Prices Skyrocket Due to Supply Issues and Disease

Post by : Bianca Haleem

As Thanksgiving approaches, American households are witnessing unprecedented increases in turkey prices. Although some local farms like Old Brick Farm near Detroit have avoided avian viruses, the national turkey population is at a 40-year low, severely affecting both availability and pricing.

Impact of Disease on Supply

Avian flu has decimated over 2 million turkeys recently, while avian metapneumovirus has further hampered egg production. Farmers are racing against time to secure hatchlings for the following year, with delays likely impacting holiday supply.

Wholesale Price Increase

The U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that wholesale turkey prices may soar by 44% this year. As of mid-November, the average price for 8–16 pound frozen hens stands at $1.77 per pound, reflecting an 81% increase from last year. Heightened consumer demand for turkey, amid rising meat prices, continues to add pressure.

Retail Strategies to Mitigate Costs

Grocery stores are rolling out promotions to entice shoppers. Aldi and Kroger are advertising full Thanksgiving meals for under $50, while other retailers are introducing discounts to help ease financial concerns. However, additional ingredients are also experiencing price spikes due to tariffs on steel and aluminum, impacting canned goods, along with decreased cranberry production driven by weather conditions.

What to Anticipate as Shoppers

Currently, a standard basket of 11 Thanksgiving staples costs approximately $59, a 4% increase from last year. While some items like pumpkin mix have seen price reductions, cranberry sauce has skyrocketed by 38% due to drought and tariffs. For consumers, the situation is a mixed bag: the turkey might be the star of the meal, but additional costs are on the rise across the board.

Challenging Times for Holiday Feasts

For those planning Thanksgiving festivities, this year calls for early shopping, bargain hunting, and an acknowledgment of a tighter holiday budget. Despite some farmers maintaining adequate flocks, the overall market signals a scenario of scarcity, escalating prices, and a need to adjust traditional holiday practices.
