The Importance of Emotional Connection in Parenting: An Expert's Insights

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Parenting can be quite a challenge, especially as parents juggle work obligations, household tasks, and family responsibilities. Many parents find themselves talking to their kids while checking emails, scrolling through their phones, or preoccupied with deadlines. They may believe they are listening, but children can easily sense when adults are not fully attentive. Psychologist and psychotherapist Tanushri Tejas Talekar emphasizes that emotional presence from parents is crucial in shaping a child’s development and self-image.

Talekar argues that nurturing a child encompasses more than just providing food, education, or clothing. Children thrive in environments where they feel safe, understood, and emotionally supported. When parents are distracted, often unintentionally, children can feel overlooked or insignificant. This emotional disengagement can influence not only how they respond to the world but also their self-perception into adulthood.

The expert notes that many parents misconstrue emotional presence, believing it entails being perfect, always available, or avoiding appropriate discipline. Moreover, it doesn't mean one has to entertain their child constantly. Emotional presence is fundamentally about truly listening to a child's emotions. Parents should aim to understand the feelings behind behaviors rather than reacting impulsively. Talekar underscores that emotional presence should not be quantified by time spent together but rather by genuine engagement. Even a few moments of concentrated attention can significantly impact a child.

Parents shouldn’t feel guilty about being busy with work; what matters most is the quality of interaction shared with their children. When parents can be mentally present, children feel acknowledged and valued.

The psychologist offers five simple daily practices to enhance emotional connectivity. First, begin mornings with an emotional check-in. Rather than just discussing schedules or homework, parents might inquire about their child’s feelings regarding the day ahead. Second, before responding to misbehavior, take a moment to reflect on the child’s potential feelings. Third, dedicate a few moments to focused attention without distractions from devices or multitasking. Fourth, assist children in identifying their emotions without any feelings of shame, allowing them to develop an emotional vocabulary. Finally, close the day with bonding activities like sharing stories, expressing gratitude, or simply talking together, reinforcing the child’s sense of support.

When parents are emotionally available, children grow stronger and more self-assured. They learn healthy coping mechanisms for stress, tackle challenges, and maintain composure in tough situations. This fosters better emotional regulation and resilience in their future endeavors. Rather than shying away from difficulties, they confront them with self-belief.

Conversely, children raised by emotionally distant parents may develop negative coping strategies, hiding their feelings, or amplifying emotions merely to gain attention. These habits can persist into adulthood, affecting relationships, career paths, and self-esteem.

Therefore, a few minutes of authentic listening each day can profoundly transform a child’s life. When parents demonstrate genuine interest, ask relevant follow-up questions, and listen attentively, children feel treasured. They begin to believe that their most trusted person truly acknowledges them. This emotional bond empowers them to navigate the world with confidence and resilience.
