US Approves Pilot Program for Electric Air Taxis

US Approves Pilot Program for Electric Air Taxis

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The United States government has approved several pilot projects to test electric air taxis, marking a major step toward integrating this new form of transport into the country’s airspace.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it has selected eight proposals under the Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program. The initiative was first introduced in an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last year to accelerate the development of next-generation aviation technology.

According to the department, more than 30 proposals were submitted for the program. The selected projects will operate across more than two dozen US states, allowing companies and local authorities to test electric aircraft in real-world conditions.

One of the major projects will involve a partnership between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and several aviation companies including Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, BETA Technologies, and Electra.aero. This project will explore multiple operational concepts, including passenger air taxi services at the Manhattan heliport in New York.

Industry leaders say the approval signals strong government support for the emerging air mobility sector. Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer Aviation, said the decision shows that the White House, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and the Department of Transportation consider bringing air taxis to market a major priority.

Following the announcement, shares of Joby Aviation rose by up to 8.4%, while Archer Aviation shares increased by about 2.2% in US post-market trading.

Apart from New York, transportation departments from Texas, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina are also among the selected participants in the pilot program.

Electric air taxi startups such as Joby and Archer have been working closely with regulators to obtain the approvals needed for commercial operations. The pilot program will allow them to test their aircraft and operational systems before receiving full certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The US government plans to use lessons from these trials to develop regulations for the rapidly growing advanced air mobility industry.

FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau said the partnerships will help authorities understand how to safely and efficiently integrate electric aircraft into the National Airspace System.

The three-year pilot program is designed to help companies demonstrate the viability of their technology, allow cities to begin building the necessary infrastructure, and introduce the public to electric air travel.

Some projects will also test cargo and medical transport missions. BETA Technologies, which is participating in seven of the eight selected projects, plans to focus heavily on cargo and critical medical operations.

BETA founder and CEO Kyle Clark said the program will help improve connectivity and access for communities across the United States.

Meanwhile, Electra.aero CEO Marc Allen said companies involved in the program have been asked to prepare operations within 90 days to make the most of the three-year initiative. Electra is developing a hybrid-electric aircraft capable of taking off and landing in spaces as short as 150 feet.

Officials say the pilot program is expected to accelerate the development of electric air taxis, bringing the technology closer to commercial use in the United States.
